1. When is an assignment created in Canvas? Is it done when the first student finishes a quiz?
A: Yes, an assignment on Canvas is created when the first student in the course completes the corresponding graded subsection in the edX course. The integrated channel takes care of determining if the particular subsection has been transmitted previously to the individual customer’s Canvas instance. If it finds the grade in the integrated course then it posts a submission for the student being transmitted, otherwise it creates it.
2. All assignments have the same name "Section Quiz“. Is it possible to inherit the name of each quiz so that this appears in Canvas?
A: The assignment should have the name of the subsection on edX. We can investigate exactly where the field comes from but we suspect that the integrated course has these subsections named “Section Quiz”.
3. Are assignments weighted or do they all weigh the same in the final grade?
A: The exact pointing of the subsections is based on the amount of points possible and received on the edX course. Quizzes are omitted from the student’s final grade due to the fact that we also transmit a final edX course grade as an assignment, in the same way we report subsections. Because both the subsections and the completion reporting represent the same objects on Canvas, they would both affect the student’s Total grade on Canvas in the same weighted way. Students should be able to view how many points the quiz was worth and how many points they received on it, but they will not change the student’s grade in the course- the completion reporting will.
4. All section quizzes are marked "Do not count this towards the final grade“. How is the final grade calculated and migrated into Canvas?
A: As per the explanation above, final grades are reported by the completion reporting transmissions which are separate from the subsection reporting. However the method by which these tasks are triggered and transmitted are parallel. The integrated channel detects if the “Final Grade” assignment has been generated in the Canvas course, creates if not, and submits on behalf of the student.
5. When are grades synced between edX and Canvas?
A: Grades should be synced as the students go through the course on edX. We perform a catch all, bulk transmit that is intended to ensure any failed or lost transmissions are sent over, 4 times a day.
